The stadium in Senayan is defined by its scale and the rebuilding that transformed it. After the Asian Games, the structure lost much of its original volume as the terraces were dismantled to make way for individual seating. The result is a vast arena that feels quieter.

It is not a hybrid pitch, unlike the modern ground built alongside it. The surface is Zoysia japonica, treated with a system of automatic sprinklers that drain the water without waste. It is a natural surface, worn by decades of use and recent renovation work overseen by a joint operation of local contractors.

The name on the building honours the first president, Sukarno, a name restored by decree after a long period when it was known simply as Stadion Utama Senayan. The identity of the place is marked by the name itself.

The stadium has hosted the closing ceremonies for the Asian Games and the final of the AFC Asian Cup in 2007. It has also seen Pope Francis celebrate a Holy Mass and major concerts by artists including Coldplay and BTS. The primary tenants are the Indonesia national football team and Persija Jakarta.

The capacity is smaller now than when it opened, a consequence of the all-seater conversion. Inside, the stands are mostly empty, with a running track separating the seats from the grass.

The roof is a lattice of steel. There are no commercial sponsor names on the exterior, only the national symbols and the official signage in Indonesian.
