Güttingersreuti

The Güttingersreuti complex in Weinfelden presents a study in contrasts, where the practical meets the public. The exterior sits quietly against the landscape, a functional shell for the sporting life within.

Inside the ice arena, the space opens up beneath a timber ceiling held by steel trusses. The seating wraps around the rink in a simple, unadorned fashion. The ice itself is a flat, white canvas. The atmosphere is one of focused activity.

Though the ice has hosted international youth competitions and served as a base for visiting national teams, the facility remains grounded in its local role. It is a place where the HC Thurgau plays its home games, a community hub rather than a destination for tourists. The football pitch, a natural grass surface with a smaller capacity, shares the grounds but plays a secondary part in the complex's identity. The architecture is straightforward, built for utility and durability, designed by the firm Zwimpfer Partner Architekten to serve the needs of the town without drawing attention to itself.

There is no grand history to unpack here, only the steady rhythm of local sport. The number of people who fill the stands on a winter evening matters less than the fact that the stands are filled. It is a working building, not a monument, and that is its defining characteristic.
