Gymnase Delaune
Ivry-sur-Seine, France
The Gymnase Auguste-Delaune in Ivry-sur-Seine is an indoor sports hall that is not much concerned with the size of the crowd. The building was constructed in 1953, when the sport it now hosts was still being played on outdoor pitches; the shift indoors was a change of climate as much as of habit.
The roof is the thing that draws the eye.
The text on it is in French, as is the name of the building itself, which has not changed since it first opened its doors.
On a recent February day, the hall was silent. A fire had broken out during maintenance work, damaging the roof and forcing the local handball team, US Ivry Handball, to relocate their home matches. The court is clear now, the parquet floor polished and ready, but the atmosphere is different. The building stands between the town and the history of the man it is named after, a sportsman and a Resistance fighter who was killed by the Gestapo in 1943.
