Highmark Stadium

The ground that sat at 1 Bills Drive is gone now. The site held the Buffalo Bills for more than half a century. The old structure never relied on natural grass. The pitch carried AstroTurf, moved to AstroPlay, and finally settled on A-Turf Titan 50.

The most striking memory belongs to the winter of 2008. The NHL Winter Classic brought the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins to the football field in front of 71,217 fans. That crowd set an attendance record for an ice hockey game at the time. The stadium also hosted concerts, drawing in The Rolling Stones, One Direction, and Dave Matthews Band over the years.

Visitors approaching the site would have seen the pedestrian walkway signs and the flow of traffic along the perimeter. The aerial view reveals the sweeping oval shape, with the end zones marked by the team’s branding on the artificial turf. The stands were filled with blue and white seats, arranged in tiers that rose steeply from the field. The renovation in 2014 added an upper deck and new HD video boards, modernising the experience for fans who came games.

The naming rights shifted through several phases: Rich Stadium, Ralph Wilson Stadium, New Era Field, and Bills Stadium, before settling as Highmark Stadium in its final years. Erie County invested in maintenance in 2018, but the demolition followed soon after in 2026. The new arena nearby carries the same name but holds fewer spectators. The old ground’s capacity once reached 71,608, a number that now belongs to the past.
