Hokejové centrum Pouzar

The Hokejové centrum Pouzar sits in the Máje sports complex, tucked away in the Čtyři Dvory district of České Budějovice. There is no grand façade to mark its arrival; you find it on Evžena Rošického 1756, a street that feels more like a quiet residential lane than a destination for sport. The building itself is unremarkable, a functional block of concrete and glass that blends into the post-war architecture of the city. What matters here is not the exterior but the interior, where the air is always cold and the ice is cut fresh.

It is a small place. The capacity is 300, and that number has not changed since its opening. There is no pressure to expand, no need to chase the glamour of international tournaments. The space is defined by its proximity to the ice. Spectators sit close enough to hear the skates bite into the surface, a sound that echoes off the low ceilings. The arena serves as a home for HC Českobudějovičtí lvi, a youth club founded by Jaroslav Pouzar, and for several other local teams that play in the regional leagues. HC Mad Bull U15 and U17 are regulars here, as is VSTE Black Dogs Budweis.

The facility operates without a fanfare. It is known locally as 'hokejová hala na Máji', a name that sticks because it is simple and accurate. The ice is maintained with an Olympia resurfacer, and the cooling system runs on ammonia-free technology, a detail that suggests a concern for the environment over the spectacle. Amateur tournaments come through, sometimes drawing teams from abroad, but the heart of the centre remains local. It is a training ground first, a match arena second.
