Instalaciones Zubieta
San Sebastián, Spain
Instalaciones Zubieta You walk down Paseo de Arrapide to find it, and the ground immediately reveals its character: a main pitch surrounded by standing banks that are now steel and plastic. The grass is a deep, uniform green, marked out for a game, not a rehearsal.
The stadium does not hide behind advertising hoardings. Beyond the touchline, there is a low wall and then a slope covered in trees and shrubs. The weather moves over the pitch directly. On a wet afternoon the grass is slick, and the players in the blue and white training kits move differently than they would on a dry day. You can see the mountains in the distance, grey and hazy. The main stand is modest, built for function rather than spectacle. There is no box for sponsors, no glass-fronted hospitality area. Just seats and a roof.
This is not a ground that was designed to host a final. It is a working place. The renovation in 2004 replaced the old terraces, and the result is a clean, simple sight. The capacity is small enough that you can see the players' faces, but the setting is what matters. It is a pitch in a valley, enclosed by the city but not dominated by it. The roof provides cover, but the wind still finds its way across the field. You do not need to look at a programme to know who plays here. The blue and white shirts in the training session are enough.
