Kampa-Halle

It is a space built for handball.

The hall has a history of shifts rather than a single origin story. It opened in 1970 as the Kreissporthalle Minden, a name that served the district for decades. A major renovation funded by the private sponsor Kampa and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia brought new life to the building in 1999, at which point the name changed. The public access was suspended for a time due to structural defects, but the hall eventually reopened for sport, resuming its role as the home of the GWD Minden handball team.

The capacity for a match is 4,059 seats, a number that feels appropriate for the scale of the room. When the away end is full, the noise travels straight up to the lights. The architecture is functional: steel trusses support the roof and the advertising boards sit low, keeping the focus on the action rather than the structure. The venue can hold more people for concerts, but for sport, the limit is set by the seating arrangement. The wooden floorboards are worn in places where the feet move fastest, a quiet sign of the countless matches that have been played there.
