Kartoffelhalle
Erfurt, Germany
The Kartoffelhalle carries its name from an era when the site served as an outdoor rink. The original surface was artificial ice, laid out in the open before the current structure rose to cover it. That original rink opened on December 29, 1957, and stood until 1979, when the old stadium was demolished and the indoor arena was constructed in its place. The building that stands today dates from that year.
Inside, the space is defined by its proximity to the ice. The capacity sits at 1,200, though some sources stretch that number to 1,300. The highest recorded crowd for a hockey match came on October 27, 2023, when 1,212 spectators watched the Black Dragons host Hannover. The TecArt Black Dragons Erfurt have played their home games here since the 2008/09 season, competing in the Oberliga Nord.
The arena itself is used for more than just the professional team; youth sides from EHC Erfurt and other local clubs such as BSG Fiskus Erfurt and SC Medizin Erfurt train and play matches within the same space. The adjacent Gunda-Niemann-Stirnemann-Halle was opened in 2001 to complete the covering of the sports facilities, and that hall later hosted the ISU World Cup Speed Skating Final in 2015.
