Kleine EWE Arena

The Kleine EWE Arena sits in the Donnerschwee district of Oldenburg. The facility opened on June 11, 2005, designed by asp architekten Stuttgart, and it sits beside the Kongresshalle, a building dating back to 1954 that was renovated in 1995.

Inside, the floor is parquet, a wooden surface that sets the tone for the events held here: basketball and handball. When the EWE Baskets Oldenburg played in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) between 2005 and 2013, the floor would have been set for 3,148 spectators. For handball, the numbers drop to 2,300. For concerts, the capacity stretches to 4,100, though for most of that time the team played in the adjacent Große EWE Arena, which opened in 2013.

Before that, it was known just as the EWE Arena. The sister building cost approximately €38.6 million to build. The Kleine EWE Arena hosted a WBO Intercontinental Super Middleweight title fight in October 2013, a match between Arthur Abraham and Giovanni De Carolis. It also plays host to the VfL Oldenburg Handball Frauen.

The complex is owned by the City of Oldenburg and operated by Weser-Ems-Halle Oldenburg GmbH & Co. KG. There is no attendance record that stands out for a single match; the figures are tied to the specific sport being played or the configuration of the seating.
