KRK Nagorny
Nizhny Novgorod, Russia
Formerly: Nizhny Novgorod Trade Union Sports Palace, Nagorny Sports Palace
There is a certain honesty in the way the Nagorny Sports Palace carries its history. The building sits at 29 Gagarin Avenue. It began as the Nizhny Novgorod Trade Union Sports Palace in 1965, a facility in the Gorky region. That original structure had a life of its own. In July 1974, a storm tore through the city, destroying the roof and shattering windows, forcing a nine-month reconstruction that altered the building's character.
The current appearance of the arena is a product of that disruption. The older image reveals a low-rise building with a curved facade and a blue and white colour scheme, topped by the Cyrillic lettering «ДВОРЕЦ СПОРТА». The second image, taken after the major reconstruction in 2007, presents a different story. The building has grown, adding a four-storey annex and a glass curtain wall that reflects the sky. The entrance now features a white, modernist portico, and flags stand before the glass. The capacity was increased to 5,500 for the return of HC Torpedo to the Russian Superleague, but the spirit of the place remains tied to its origins.
Inside, the ice is natural, poured onto a concrete pad. It is a working venue, hosting the KHL side Torpedo and the WHL club SKIF, but it is also a quiet place. There are no grand towers of steel to distract from the game. The atmosphere is one of an older era of sport, where the focus is on the players and the sound of skates on the ice. The arena has hosted playoff matches and concerts, but its primary function is to keep the game alive in a city that has moved on. It is a building that has survived, adapted, and kept its place.
