League Field

The stadium opened in 1905 on land owned by the city of Canton, built with wooden grandstands that held 8,000 spectators. The Canton Bulldogs used the ground as their home from its first season until 1926, when the team folded. Jim Thorpe joined the club in 1915, and the average crowd rose from 1,500 to between 6,000 and 8,000, with 8,000 being the capacity. The Bulldogs won the Ohio League in 1916, 1917 and 1919, then the first two American Professional Football Association (APFA) titles in 1922 and 1923. The APFA, which became the National Football League (NFL), was organized at the ground in 1920, and Thorpe served as its first permanent president.

The stadium was demolished in 1927, shortly after the Bulldogs folded. It was replaced by Fawcett Stadium, dedicated in 1938, which was later renamed Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The original League Field is no longer in use. The playing surface was natural grass, and the venue was owned and operated by the Canton Athletic Club, which later became the Canton Athletic Company.
