Sokolniki Ice Palace
Moscow, Russia
Formerly: Sokolniki Sports Palace, Sokolniki Ice Palace
The arena stands on Sokolnichesky Val Street, 1B. The first structure opened on April 14, 1956, as an open-air rink before being enclosed and reconstructed into a covered palace between 1973 and 1974. That original building was demolished in 2021–2022 to make way for the new complex.
The new facility, developed by the TEN Group, carries the name "Legends of Hockey – Sokolniki" (ЛД «Легенды хоккея – Сокольники»). Its capacity sits at 1,300, a fraction of the five-story addition built for the 1980 Summer Olympics, which once held around 5,530 spectators. The playing surface is artificial ice laid over a wooden deck.
The ground has hosted major international tournaments, including the handball event at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and the World Youth Games in 1998 and 2002. It also served as the home arena for HC Spartak Moscow. Historically, HK Lokomotiv Moscow played here for a period spanning from 1947 to 1983. The most notable incident occurred on March 10, 1975, during a junior hockey match between the USSR and Canada, when a stampede resulted in 21 deaths
