Luzira Prisons Stadium

Kampala, Uganda

Luzira Prisons Stadium does not sit in a park or a sports quarter. The ground is tucked inside the Luzira Maximum Security Prison complex in the Mpanga area of Nakawa, Kampala. It is a facility owned by the Uganda Prisons Service, and its presence is defined by the high walls that surround the pitch. The location is approximately 10 kilometres southeast of the city centre, a quiet spot compared to the busy streets outside.

The stadium is the home of Maroons FC, a club formed in 1965. The club took its name from the prison uniforms. Maroons won the first two Ugandan Super League titles here in 1968 and 1969. The ground has been used for football since at least that time, though the exact year the stands were raised is not recorded. The club has played there for decades, even as the name stuck to the location rather than the institution.

What makes the pitch difficult to play on is the surface. Some sources call it natural grass, but reports describe a sand pitch that has deteriorated under heavy rains and constant use. The conditions have been so poor that league matches were suspended until the ground could be restored. The capacity is uncertain; one count suggests 1,000 seats, while another places the figure at 5,000.

Recently, the stadium hosted SC Villa for temporary home games in the 2024/25 season while their own venue was being renovated for the African Nations Championship. It has also seen neutral fixtures, such as the 2015 University League quarter-final between Makerere University Business School and Kyambogo University, played here to keep the peace.
