Michie Stadium
West Point, United States
Michie Stadium is situated on high ground above the Hudson River, with the water running along its eastern boundary.
It is not a new build. The stadium opened in 1924.
The ground is named for Dennis Mahan Michie, a graduate of the United States Military Academy who captained the first Army football team in 1890. The stadium itself is the home of the Army Black Knights. The surface is artificial turf, a change from the natural grass that was used for the first half-century of the ground's life. The playing field is marked with West Point at either end.
The stadium has a history of major reconstruction. A preservation project is currently underway to rebuild the eastern grandstand, which began in 2024. The work is expected to be finished by the 2026 season, after which the capacity will settle around 36,000. Before that, the capacity was reduced to 30,000 to allow the construction to proceed safely.
The setting is quiet when the team is not playing. The stadium is also used for the Academy’s graduation ceremonies, which fill the stands with a different kind of crowd.
