Mosaic Place

Moose Jaw, Canada

Formerly: Mosaic Place, Moose Jaw Events Centre

Detail of two art installations at the 161st Street–Yankee Stadium subway station: "Wall-Slide", consisting of the walls sliding out of place, to reveal "Room of Tranquility", a mosaic mural. The rest of the wall can be seen at street level, underneath the IRT mezzanine.

A Dual Contracts mosaic on the Manhattan-bound platform of the 161st Street – Yankee Stadium IRT station, above River Avenue and 161st Street in Highbridge / Concourse, Bronx. While the mosaic itself is nice, it feels out of place on an elevated station, without the rest of the decorative tilling.

The place sits at 110 1st Avenue NW. It opened in 2011, built to replace the old Civic Centre. The roof takes in light, and underneath, an ice battery stores cold for the arena floor. It is an odd thing to find in a town that size.

The name has shifted more than once. It began as Mosaic Place, then became the Moose Jaw Events Centre, and in March 2025 it took the name Temple Gardens Centre after an agreement with the Peepeekisis Cree Nation. It seats 4,414 for hockey and stretches to 5,000. It is a reminder that this is not just a rink, but a place for the whole town.

Inside, the seating bowl is steep enough to keep the games close. The curling club takes up one wing, and the banquet rooms sit above it, quiet when the matches end.
