Nordkraft Arena
Narvik, Norway
Nordkraft Arena It was built to house the Arctic Eagles, a side that plays in the EliteHockey Ligaen, but the building itself is a multi-purpose hall rather than a strict sports venue. You do not find a football pitch here; the surface is ice, and the capacity is 1,200 for a match before the space is rearranged for a concert where the number rises to 2,000.
The project began after twenty years of planning and was financed through lottery funds and business contributions. The contract was signed in May 2007, and the arena opened in stages. The public skating opening took place in December 2010, followed by a cultural event in March 2011 and the official ice rink opening with a hockey match in September 2011. It has been called Nordkraft Arena since the beginning, following a sponsorship agreement with Nordkraft AS which was a prerequisite for the financing. The name has not changed.
While the arena hosts the Arctic Eagles, it is not the only sports venue in Narvik, but it is the primary one for ice hockey. The arena is a functional space, built for purpose rather than grandeur, and it serves the local community well.
