PPG Paints Arena
Pittsburgh, United States
Formerly: Consol Energy Center
It took the city a while to build the thing that sits where the old dome used to be. The Civic Arena, which had held the Penguins for half a century, was a thing of the past. It did not ask the public for a single dollar, but it did ask the state for a hand. The deal was struck with casino companies , and the Penguins' owner, Mario Lemieux, sat at the head of the table. It opened in 2010, and the ice was already frozen.
There is a difference between a carpet of grass and a sheet of water. The arena does not have a surface of turf; it has a surface of ice. The rink is laid down for the hockey season, and when the final puck drops, the water melts away to make room for a concert stage. It is a seasonal thing.
One can see the difference between the old days and now. That is the way it works.
