Rogers Arena
Vancouver, Canada
Formerly: General Motors Place, Canada Hockey Place
Arthur Griffiths funded the whole thing through private money, and his family owned the hockey team that moved in when the doors opened in September 1995. The building replaced the Pacific Coliseum as the city's main venue, giving the Canucks a home of their own for the first time.
In February 2010 the arena went by another name for two weeks. Canada took gold in both the men's and women's tournaments, and the team stayed on after the games were over. The name reverted in July that year when Rogers Communications signed a ten-year deal.
More recently the floor hosted the first Professional Women's Hockey League game in the city, with 19,038 people in the stands.
The refrigeration system has not changed since the arena opened. The architects Brisbin, Brook, and Beynon drew the plans, and the original construction cost $160 million in 1995 dollars.
