RT Torax Aréna

The RT Torax Arena sits heavily over the district of Poruba. It does not look like a place built for grand occasions; the stands are simple and functional rather than imposing.

What is different here is the way it sits between sports. A footballer would not find a pitch inside, nor a basketballer a hardwood floor. The two surfaces are sheets of ice, maintained by a refrigeration system that runs through the winter months. HC RT TORAX Poruba has called this place home since the arena opened, and when other teams need a backup venue, they come to the artificial ice. The capacity is listed at 4,200, but the stands are simple and functional rather than imposing.

The arena is not in the centre of Ostrava, but in the working-class district where families live and workers commute. The entrance is modest, with a metal canopy and a few steps leading up to glass doors. Outside, the pavement is cracked in places, and a bicycle rack stands near the corner. The building has not been rebuilt for a tournament or a new league; it simply exists as a spare room for sport in a city that has many of them. When the ice melts in spring, the venue sits quiet until the cold returns.
