Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre
Victoria, Canada
The ground sits on Blanshard Street in Victoria. The older hall had poor acoustics.
The arena opened on 26 March 2005. Construction began on 6 June 2003. It cost about CA$40 million to build. RG Construction, Ltd. pulled the job, with architects from ICR Projects Inc. and John Neilson Architects Inc. It is the biggest arena on Vancouver Island and the largest in British Columbia outside of Vancouver.
The Victoria Royals moved in for the 2011–12 season. Before them, the Salmon Kings played here from 2004 to 2011. The Salmon Kings opened with some games at Bear Mountain Arena while this place was still being finished.
The capacity shifts for events. The guide lists 7,006 for hockey, but concerts can pull 9,000. In June 2023, a women’s basketball game between Canada and Japan drew 4,600 fans for a record. The 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship put 6,602 people in the seats for one match. During the pandemic in May 2020, the BC government turned the arena into a 45-bed centre for people experiencing homelessness.
Concerts have come through. Shania Twain played here in October 2015. Avril Lavigne filled the house on 25 May 2022. Ice Cube performed on 23 April 2024.
