Scaniarinken

Scaniarinken in Södertälje is one of those places. It stands as an indoor arena.

The structure is dominated by two distinct sections of seating. One side, visible from the football match held there, carries rows of red chairs under a single, sloping roof. This side faces the pitch directly. The other part of the building, where the ice hockey games take place, is a deeper bowl of black and red seats. Above them, the scoreboard hangs like a giant red eye, displaying the score and the time remaining. The space between the stands and the playing area is tight, forcing the crowd close to the action whether they are watching a game of football or ice hockey.

Inside the hockey section, the atmosphere is quieter. Banners hang from the ceiling, red flags celebrating championships won over the decades. They do not shout, but they hang heavy with history. The surface below is ice, white and cold, reflecting the light from the high ceiling. The glass barriers around the rink keep the spectators separate from the players, creating a sharp line between the two worlds.

It is a strange place to find a football pitch. The grass is green and wet, contrasting with the grey sky above. Players run across it, but the stands rise too high around them, creating a sense of enclosure. The netting in front of the goal is thick and green, separating the viewer from the field. It is a venue that plays host to many different sports, but it does not feel entirely at home with any of them. It is a container for activity, a place where the game changes but the walls remain the same.
