Sporthal The Dome
Houten, Netherlands
The building is not a cathedral of football — it is a hall for handball in the Utrecht suburb of Houten. Sporthal The Dome sits at Kruisboog 32 and opened in December 2015 after planning began in 2006. The capacity is 1,500, with 700 seats, and the floor is a multifunctional surface that meets the standards of the Dutch National Olympic Committee and Sports Federation.
The main tenant is the handball club HV Houten, which competes in the Dutch Eredivisie and played in the BENE-League from 2019 to 2022. The venue has hosted the Dutch Handball Supercup in 2023 and 2024, when KEMBIT-LIONS faced Kras/Volendam and OTTO Workforce/VOC Amsterdam took on Cabooter Handbal Venlo in the women's final. The event moved to Aalsmeer in 2025.
Judo groups such as SV Judo Odijk and Judoschool Ukemi use the hall, as does Houtens College for physical education. The building is owned by the 'Multifunctioneel Centrum The Dome' entity, tied to the local energy cooperative Opgewekt Houten. There are no former names for the structure — it has always been called The Dome.
