What sets the ground apart is not its scale — the table lists it at 16,100 — but how the stands sit round the pitch. The South and East terraces are open to the sky , while the new North end is fully roofed.

The stadium has survived a war and a near-collapse . Bomb hits during the Second World War damaged the original structure, and it reopened in 1947 after the club rebuilt it. The North Stand, once uncovered, was replaced in 2008 after years of dispute over the land. More recently , the roof of the East Stand had to be demolished in May 2024 because of imminent collapse risk . A master plan for a comprehensive renovation was approved in late 2025, with construction planned to begin in summer 2026.

The pitch itself is natural grass , and the floodlights cast a steady glow over the field at night.

The stadium has hosted everything from a German Championship Final Round match in 1952 to a UEFA Women's Euro 1989 Final .
