The original Wankdorfstadion opened in 1925 and was rebuilt in 1954 to host the final of the FIFA World Cup. That match, where West Germany defeated Hungary 3–2, was played before 62,500 spectators. The structure stood for decades until it was demolished in 2001.
The current stadium opened in 2005, originally named Stade de Suisse before being renamed Stadion Wankdorf in 2020. BSC Young Boys have played here since 1925, returning to the new build in 2005 after a brief period elsewhere.
The pitch is covered with artificial turf, though temporary natural grass was laid for the 2008 European Championship and again for the Women's Euro 2025. The venue hosts football matches and ice hockey, holding a local attendance record for the sport in 2007.
