Tabor Ice Hall
Maribor, Slovenia
To understand Tabor Ice Hall requires looking past the clean lines of its 2022 renovation. The building has lived through two distinct phases. First came the foundations laid in 1964 and the unofficial open-air rink that opened in 1974. Then came the roof added in 1986 and the full enclosure in 1988. The official opening date is cited as 1984, but the structure only became the modern venue after the 1988 closure. This history explains why the capacity shifts so easily; it holds 3,800 for general events but drops to 3,500 for matches, a reminder that the space was never designed for one purpose alone.
The primary tenant is HDK Maribor, known locally as the Lisjaki. The club was founded in 1993 and now plays in the ICE Hockey League. They are not the first to call this ice home. HK Maribor competed in the Yugoslav league and reached the elite division in the 1984/85 season before the political landscape changed. The arena also serves as a training ground for the Slovenian national teams, a function that has been constant since the enclosure was completed.
The most significant moment in recent history arrived in April 2005. During the IIHF World U18 Championship Division I, the arena held 877 spectators for a match between Slovenia and Austria. It remains the highest official attendance record for a hockey match at this venue. Other games during that tournament drew similar numbers, with 822 fans watching Slovenia against Belarus and 820 for the contest against Great Britain.
Beyond sport, the venue has hosted cultural events, such as the "Piše se leto" festival in 2013. The arena does not have a separate website; it is managed by Šport Maribor d. o. o. The building celebrated its 50th anniversary since the unofficial 1974 opening in 2024, marking a half-century of ice in the city.
