Tatneft Arena
Kazan, Russia
Formerly: LDS-1000
Tatneft Arena was built to mark the 1000th anniversary of the city, which is why the operating company still bears the name LDS-1000. Ak Bars Kazan plays its ice hockey matches there, and the rink is set to the standard 60 by 26 meters.
The building is not old, but it has a specific look. The pitch is natural grass — or rather, the surface inside is ice, but the card lists the external ground as natural. On match days the place feels fuller than its 8,900-seat capacity would suggest.
It opened in 2005 with a concert by the rock band Scorpions. The arena was later renamed after the oil company Tatneft took the sponsorship. That deal is what gives the place its current name, though the legal entity behind it has not changed. The pitch cut up badly — or rather, the ice surface needs regular resurfacing, which happens between periods and before away games.
There are no major structural changes to report since the opening; the stands have not been extended and the roof remains the same. The venue also hosts concerts, which is why the capacity can stretch to 10,400 when seats are rearranged for a band. For hockey, however, the standard figure is 8,900, and that is the number that matters most to the club. The history between them adds an edge — not because of rivalry, but because this is the only indoor arena in the district that plays host to professional sport.
Visitors arrive via the main road and walk past the ticket office before reaching the turnstiles. The concourses are wide, and the seating rises quickly. There is no tower, no landmark nearby — just a functional building that has served the city for nearly two decades. Got his substitutions spot on — a phrase that might apply to the arena’s versatility, switching from hockey to concerts without losing its character.
