Tatran Handball Arena

The Tatran Handball Arena in Prešov opened in 1978 as a municipal hall.

The most distinct feature is the floor beneath the players. The surface is synthetic Gerflor. The arena hosts the local handball club, HT Tatran Prešov, who have played on this surface through the European competitions. The club reached the 1/8 Final of the European Handball Federation Champions League in the 2004/05 season and played in the Group Stage the following year, bringing international matches to this relatively quiet corner of Slovakia.

Seating rises in steep, open tiers around the court. The capacity is reported differently, with figures ranging from 3,870 to 4,870 depending on the source consulted. The building itself is owned by the City of Prešov and operated by the club, a straightforward arrangement for a public facility. A major reconstruction took place around 2010, or perhaps 2012, after which the venue was formally renamed. The structure serves the town without being a destination in itself; it is a place where the local team plays and where national qualifiers are held.
