The playing surface is hybrid grass, completed during the 2010 renovation alongside a new covered stand. The work followed a brief spell when the reserve team played away at Cologne’s Südstadion while the BayArena underwent its own extensive rebuild. Those plans to expand the stadium to 5,000 seats were quietly abandoned, leaving the existing 3,200 as a fixed boundary for local matches.
The renaming in 1998 honoured Ulrich Haberland, the former general director and later chairman of Bayer AG, and set the smaller venue apart from its larger counterpart.
One notable fixture took place on 3 August 2013, when Oberliga side Sportfreunde Baumberg travelled here to face FC Ingolstadt 04 in the DFB-Pokal. The away club lost 4–1, but the result said little about the ground itself, which continued to function without fanfare.
Bismarckstraße 122 marks the address, though the location is best understood by standing on the quiet street behind the main arena and noticing how much space the smaller building takes up.
