Veterans Memorial Coliseum sits in the Rose Quarter of Portland, Oregon, a district that has changed around it. It is not a modern glass box; the concrete frame and the diamond-patterned bracing on the curved facade are still the original work of the architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The building opened in 1960, and the flagpoles outside still fly alongside the palm trees that have grown since then. The official address is 300 N Ramsay Way, but the location is defined by its presence in the Lloyd District, where it has housed sports since the early sixties.

The most striking feature is the exterior, which looks more like a civic building than a sports arena. The dark glass panels are held in place by a steel exoskeleton that has weathered over decades. Inside, the surface switches between hardwood and ice, a duality that has served both the Portland Trail Blazers and the Winterhawks. The arena was once home to the Portland Timbers of the North American Soccer League, and the timber on the ice still smells faintly of the old days. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, a status that acknowledges its age and its role in the city's development.

Renovations have trimmed the capacity, reducing the numbers from the twelve thousand that once filled the stands, but the atmosphere remains distinct. The Beatles played here in 1965, and the crowd of twenty thousand set a record that has never been broken. President Gerald Ford attended an NBA game here in 1974, becoming the first sitting president to do so. The building is owned by the City of Portland and operated by Rip City Management, a arrangement that keeps it in the public eye. The renovations completed in 2025 replaced older seats with wider ones, a practical change that respects the historic nature of the space. The arena is a reminder of a time when large gatherings happened in open, concrete structures rather than enclosed domes.
