The original structure dates back to the end of the Second World War, born out of a need for the first artificial ice rink in Bratislava. The city built that first shell in 1940, and it has sat there ever since, changing its shape as the decades passed.
There is a visible tension in the architecture now. The renovation that finished in 2011 cost nearly a hundred million euros. It was ST Aréna, then T-Com Aréna, then Samsung Aréna, before becoming Orange Arena and, most recently, Slovnaft Arena.
It is a venue that has seen more than just hockey, hosting figure skating championships and floorball tournaments as well.
