Al-Gharafa and Luail City played out a 0-0 draw in the Qatari Stars League on Thursday evening. The match at the regular season stage four fixture ended without either side finding the net despite both creating opportunities. It was a game where chances went begging on both sides.
Al-Gharafa started brighter and dominated possession early on. Ferjani Sassi picked up a yellow card in the twenty-third minute after a challenge that looked like it could have gone either way. By then the hosts had already pushed into the final third several times but Luail City's defence held firm with clearances and interceptions keeping things level.
The second half brought a flurry of changes from both managers. Florinel Coman came on for Al-Gharafa in the sixty-fourth minute followed by Yacine Brahimi twenty-six minutes later. Luail City made three substitutions around the eighty-minute mark with Omid Ebrahimi, Khaled Mohammed and Amro Surag all entering the frame. It was a game where managers switched off at the back and tried to find something different.
What stood out was how both teams created space but failed to convert. Al-Gharafa registered four shots on target while Luail City managed just one. The visitors' goalkeeper had to make four saves compared to one for his counterpart. Big chances created sat at zero for both sides which tells you everything about a match where nothing clicked.
The statistics tell a story of two teams that played with similar intent. Al-Gharafa held 54 per cent possession and completed 395 passes while Luail City made 204 passes into the opposition half. Both sides made eighteen tackles each and neither team committed more than two yellow cards. Shots accuracy was 27 per cent for the hosts against nine per cent for the visitors — not the sort of numbers that suggest a tight finish.
The result keeps Luail City sixth with four points from three games while Al-Gharafa remain ninth on three points. Neither team has lost momentum but neither has found a rhythm either. The standings show this is still early days with plenty of room for movement before the season settles down.
