Match report

The Brewers beat the Cubs 8:6 in a regular-season MLB match on 2026-09-09. It was the third meeting between the sides in four days, and this time the home side held on for victory. The scoreline tells you something about the game — plenty of runs, plenty of chances. And here's the thing, it's not often you see two teams trade runs like that.

Both sides had been playing each other already this week. The Cubs lost 3:4 at home on the 8th, then 3:4 again on the 7th. The Brewers had lost twice in that series before winning 4:3 at home on the 7th. By then they'd also dropped 8:12 to the Reds on the 6th and 3:5 on the 5th. The form was all over the place for both clubs.

We had called for a home win in our preview, with 59 per cent confidence in the Brewers. That prediction has now come in, which is as good as you'll get when no one knows what's going to happen until the last out. It wasn't a foregone conclusion — the Cubs had been competitive in both previous meetings — but the home advantage showed through.

The Cubs were coming off a 3:10 loss to the Marlinns on the 6th before winning two straight, 6:5 and 6:1, on the 4th and 5th. The Brewers, meanwhile, had bounced back from that heavy Reds defeat with a 10:7 win on the 4th. Momentum shifted more than once in this series, and tonight the home side got the better of it.

To be fair, an eight-run game like this doesn't say much about dominance. The Brewers scored more, but both teams put up numbers. There's no value left in calling one side the better team when both were putting runs on the board. What matters is the result, and tonight it was the Brewers who closed it out.
