United took a 2-0 win over Sporting Lagos in the opening match of the НПФЛ regular season on Saturday. The home side controlled the tempo from the start and saw out a comfortable victory despite Sporting Lagos having more attacks overall. The result puts United four places above their opponents in the table after one game.
They opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a well-worked chance. Sporting Lagos responded with pressure of their own, but United held firm and went ahead again in the seventy-fifth minute. By then they had already reduced their opposition to ten men after the red card in the forty-fifth minute plus three seconds.
The dismissal came just before half-time and changed the shape of the second half entirely. Sporting Lagos received a yellow card in the forty-fifth minute plus four seconds, then United added another booking in the seventy-seventh and one more in the eighty-sixth. The away end never stopped, but the extra man made the difference.
United dominated possession at 75 per cent and registered six shots on target, though only two found the net. Sporting Lagos had more attacks at 72 to 67 and won more corners on paper, but the red card left them chasing shadows. To be fair, they worked the channels when they could, but without their full strength they had nothing to lose and everything to prove.
United sit fourth on three points after one win and zero defeats. Sporting Lagos occupy twentieth place with zero points following their first loss. The gap between them is now three points and the home side have won a dangerous free-kick of confidence early in the campaign.
