Fiorentina Women Extend Lead Over Ternana With Dominant Victory
Fiorentina Women secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over Ternana Women in the Group Stage 2 of the Coppa Italia, women's Serie A competition on Saturday evening. The result extends Fiorentina's advantage in the group, while Ternana's campaign continues to face mounting pressure. The two sides met earlier this season on April 26, drawing 2-2 in Naples, and this time the home side made no mistake.
Fiorentina struck three times in quick succession before the break to take control of the encounter. I. Van Der Zanden opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, and E. Snerle doubled the lead two minutes later. Yang Lina added a third just after the interval in the 47th minute, putting the hosts in command. Ternana never seriously threatened to get back into the game.
The visitors managed to pull one back late on when E. Woldvik scored in the 91st minute, but by then the damage was done. Ternana had already seen two players booked in quick succession — E. Severini and E. Pacioni both received yellow cards in the 71st minute. S. Breitner picked up a caution for Fiorentina in the 74th, while L. Peruzzo and M. Filangeri were booked for the visitors later in the half.
Coaching staff made several changes as the match progressed, with Fiorentina bringing on four players in total. S. Hornemann and A. Regazzoli came on together in the 57th minute, followed by M. Toniolo in the 62nd and E. Faerge in the 64th. Ternana made three substitutions in the 79th minute, bringing on I. Chacon and C. Martins alongside E. Snerle, who had been on the pitch since the start. O. Johansen completed Fiorentina's changes in the 85th minute.
Fiorentina's recent form has been mixed, with a 1-2 loss to Sassuolo Women on August 23 standing out. Before that, they had won 2-1 against Lazio Women and 3-2 against Genoa, then beat Como Women 1-0 in the narrowest of margins. Ternana, meanwhile, have struggled of late, losing 0-2 to Roma Women in their most recent outing on August 22 and suffering another defeat to Roma earlier in May.
The three-goal margin gives Fiorentina breathing room in the group standings. Ternana now face an uphill battle to progress, having lost ground after their draw earlier in the season. The result means Fiorentina remain firmly in control of their own destiny in the competition.
