The match broke open early, with William Boyle turning against his side in the eighth minute to give Fleetwood the lead. By then, the visitors were already struggling to impose themselves. Ched Evans doubled the advantage in the 28th minute, and added another seven minutes later to put the game beyond doubt before the half-hour mark.
Evans was withdrawn at the interval alongside two teammates as the manager reshuffled his approach. Shrewsbury responded with increased pressure but could not find a way through. Will Davies completed the scoring in the 90th minute, a late flourish that sealed the result after a period where both sides traded possession without real threat.

The visitors registered four shots on target against three but failed to test the goalkeeper, who made four saves. Discipline remained an issue for Shrewsbury throughout, with three yellow cards compared to Fleetwood's single booking. The visitors also made more clearances and tackles, suggesting they spent more time defending than attacking. Both sides won equal aerial duels at 41 each, but the home side's defensive solidity prevented Shrewsbury from establishing any rhythm.
