Gangwon host Gamba Osaka in the 1st Preliminary Round of the AFC Champions League on 11 August, but it is the visitors who claim a 1-0 victory after extra time. The decisive moment arrived in the 103rd minute when G. Nawata found the net to send the Japanese side forward.
There was little movement in the opening half. A yellow card for T. Kishimoto at six minutes set the tone for a cagey contest, and by the time the interval arrived, R. Hatsuse had also gone close to trouble with another booking at 28 minutes. Gangwon kept possession at 42 per cent but could not test the goalkeeper — zero shots on target tells you everything.
And here's the thing about these first-round ties: the table goes out of the window. Gangwon had just lost 3-0 to Bucheon on 1 August and were looking to steady the ship, while Gamba Osaka had won four of their last five, including a 6-0 demolition of Kanazawa. To be fair, both sides knew the stakes.
The second half brought more changes. Gangwon made five substitutions — Choe Byeong-Chan, Hong Chul, J. Sekidika, D. Hummet, and Seo Min-Woo — while Gamba brought on R. Yamashita late on. Kim Dae-Won and Lee Gi-Hyuk picked up yellow cards in the 70th and 89th minutes, and Shin Min-Ha was cautioned at 98 minutes as the match stretched into extra time.
Statistics bear out the difference in quality. Gamba Osaka registered six shots on target against Gangwon's zero, while their attack count of 47 to 37 showed who dominated territory. Possession sat at 58 per cent for the visitors, and it was they who closed the game out when it mattered.
Gangwon now face the prospect of elimination after three straight defeats. Gamba Osaka, meanwhile, have one foot in the next round and will travel back to Japan knowing they've done enough to progress.
