SVZW Edge Hogevon in Penalty Shootout After Dramatic Extra Time
Hogevon and SVZW played out a 2-2 draw in the 1st Preliminary Round of the Dutch Cup before SVZW won 4-3 on penalties. The match stretched into extra time after two red cards and a flurry of goals, and the shootout decided a contest where neither side could find a winner.
Hogevon took the lead early, scoring in the fourth minute. SVZW equalised late in normal time with an eighth-sixth minute strike, but the game turned ugly when a red card arrived in the eighty-eighth minute. Extra time brought another dismissal in the one-hundred-and-fourth minute, and both sides traded goals in the dying stages of regulation.
The penalty shootout stretched to five rounds. Hogevon missed their first attempt, while SVZW converted their opening spot-kick. The teams traded goals through the next two rounds, but Hogevon's fourth penalty was saved, giving SVZW a two-goal advantage. Both sides then scored their final penalties, and SVZW held their nerve to advance.
SVZW dominated possession at sixty per cent and recorded 139 attacks compared to Hogevon's 111. The visitors also claimed seventeen corners to eight, though neither side could turn that control into a decisive advantage. Hogevon committed two yellow cards and one red, while SVZW collected five yellows and a red of their own.
The result ends a poor run for Hogevon, who have not won since beating Emmen in October. Their most recent outing was a heavy 1-4 defeat to Heracles. SVZW, meanwhile, arrived with only one recorded result—a 1-6 loss to Volendam—so this penalty victory marks a fresh start for the visitors.
