LA Edge Chivas After Penalty Drama
Los Angeles and Guadalajara Chivas shared the points in the League Cup Group Stage, ending 1-1 before a penalty shootout decided the outcome. Bouanga opened the scoring for the hosts in the thirty-eighth minute, and Alvarado equalised for the visitors four minutes later. The game went to extra time, then penalties, where LA came out on top.
The first half had its moments. Gonzalez picked up a yellow card for LA in the thirteenth minute, and by then the tension was building. Bouanga's goal came after a period of pressure, and Alvarado's response showed Chivas were not going to lie down. The hosts had possession but the visitors were dangerous on the break.
Substitutions started coming in the second half. Alvarez for LA in the seventy-first minute, Tillman and Martinez both on in the seventy-fourth. Chivas brought on Castillo, Ledezma and Gonzalez together in the eighty-third, while LA added Son Heung-Min in the eighty-sixth. The game stretched on, and extra time followed.
The shootout was something else entirely. Castaneda missed for LA, but Bouanga, Marin, Boyd, Alvarado, Gutierrez, Choiniere, Rey and Porteous all scored. Chivas saw Romo miss and only Terry found the net. Eight to one on penalties. One mistake ends it, and that was all the difference.
The statistics tell a different story from the result. Chivas had fifty-six percent possession and made more attacks, one hundred and thirteen to seventy-one. They took fourteen shots on target compared to LA's seven, and created the same number of big chances. But shots don't win matches.
LA had more attempts from distance but Chivas were sharper inside the box. The visitors won nineteen tackles to ten, and their goalkeeper made just three saves while LA's kept out six. It wasn't a game decided by volume but by the moments that mattered.
The result extends LA's unbeaten run, which includes a win over Sportin
