Orange County beat El Paso Locomotive 2-0 at the Group Stage stage of the USL Championship on Saturday evening. The hosts took all three points to remain third in the table, while El Paso moved back to the summit with 40 points after 23 games.
Ousmane Sylla opened the scoring at the 26-minute mark, giving Orange County an early advantage. The visitors had already felt the sting of a yellow card for R. Coronado two minutes before, a sign the game would not be straightforward. By then the hosts had settled into a rhythm, and the goal came as they were pushing forward.
El Paso pushed back after the break, but Orange County's defence held firm. G. Substitutions followed in the second half as both managers looked for answers. R. Ruiz came on for Orange County at 46 minutes, while El Paso brought on R. Doghman and N. Cardona. Y. Bazini and A. El Paso dominated possession at 57 per cent and registered 10 shots on target, yet only Tubbs and Sylla found the back of the net. The visitors blocked 13 shots and completed 407 passes, but their chances went begging. Orange County were more efficient, converting three of eight attempts.
The result keeps Orange County in third place with 36 points, four behind the leaders. El Paso's victory extends their advantage at the top, though they remain vulnerable against a side that knows how to punish mistakes.
