Orange County played host to Louisville City in the USL Championship Group Stage on Saturday evening, and the visitors took all three points with a 3-2 victory at the final whistle. The result shifted the momentum in the group, with Louisville moving ahead on head-to-head while Orange County remain in third place on 35 points.
R. Serrano opened the scoring for the hosts in the sixth minute, then doubled their advantage just before half-time with a second goal in quick succession. Z. Duncan picked up a yellow card on 45+1 minutes before being replaced at the break, but Orange County led 2-0 at the interval and appeared comfortable.
Then the match turned. C. Donovan pulled one back for Louisville on 68 minutes, and O. Sylla completed the comeback just two minutes later with a goal of his own. By then the game had opened up, and the momentum had shifted decisively. Orange County had controlled possession throughout but found themselves chasing the game.
Y. Bazini sealed the victory from the penalty spot on 81 minutes, and the hosts pushed for an equaliser but could not find a way through. The statistics tell a familiar story — Orange County enjoyed 63 per cent possession and created 10 shots, yet only three found the target. Louisville City, with just 37 per cent possession, were more efficient, converting 44 per cent of their shots and creating four big chances compared to the hosts' one.
There were plenty of changes across the pitch. Both managers reshuffled their lines, with Orange County bringing on T. Showunmi, J. Morris, S. Gleadle and R. Doghman at various stages. Louisville City introduced C. Hegardt, S. Kelly and B. Cambridge as they sought to protect their lead and close out the result.
The win moves Louisville City to five points clear of Orange County in the group standings, though both sides have played the same number of matches. Orange County sit third with 35 points from nine wins, eight draws and five defeats, while Louisville City are fifth with 32 points, having won nine, drawn five and lost eight games so far.
