Roasso Kumamoto beat Oita Trinita 2-0 in the Round of 128 of the J-League Cup on Tuesday. The hosts advanced in the competition with a comfortable result in front of their own supporters. Y. Katori and S. Nagai provided the goals that separated the sides.
Kumamoto took the lead in the 38th minute when Katori found the net. It was a measured start from the home side, who kept their shape and waited for their opportunity. To be fair, Oita controlled more of the territory but lacked the final touch.
Nagai doubled the advantage in the 56th minute. By then the visitors had thrown bodies forward in search of a reply, and Kumamoto were left exposed at the back. The second goal shifted the momentum decisively in the hosts' favour.
Oita made three changes at the 59th minute, bringing on Y. Sakurai, T. Shige and S. Udo in an attempt to alter the game. Kumamoto responded with four substitutions at the 72nd minute, replacing Nagai among others. The match saw two yellow cards — R. Yakushida at 66 minutes and H. Matsuoka at 90+2 — along with one more booking at 90+3.
Oita enjoyed 54 per cent possession and registered 108 attacks compared to Kumamoto's 98. The hosts, however, were more clinical with four shots on target against two for the visitors. And here's the thing — possession figures mean little when you cannot convert them.
Kumamoto now move closer to the next round of the cup. The 2-0 scoreline reflects a performance built on moments rather than sustained pressure. Oita will need to regroup before their next outing.
