Umm Salal and Qatar U23 played out a 1:1 draw in the first match of the Second Division regular season on 25 August. W. Al Bahnasawi opened the scoring for the hosts at the 19th minute before N. Al Yahri extended the lead shortly after the hour mark. Qatar U23 responded with a goal of their own to level the match, and neither side could find a winner in the remaining time.
Umm Salal arrive in fifth place with two games played, one win, one draw and four points. Qatar U23 sit eighth after two outings, having secured one draw and suffered one defeat for a single point. The result leaves the home side two points clear of their visitors in the standings.
Umm Salal's recent record has not been kind. They lost 5:0 to Lokeren-Temse in August and have been beaten in their last four competitive outings, including defeats to Al-Gharafa, Al-Ahli Doha, Al-Rayyan and Al-Shamal. Qatar U23 have shown more resilience, drawing 0:0 with Ireland U21 and bouncing back from a 1:3 loss to Oman U23 with a 2:1 victory over the same opposition.
The draw means both sides remain in contention for a stronger position as the season progresses. Umm Salal will look to build on their home advantage, while Qatar U23 will want to consolidate their first point and move away from the bottom of the table.
