Dynamo Dresden made light work of Westfalia Rhön in the German Cup first round, running out 6-0 winners at Sportplatz Papenlo on Saturday. The visitors took control from the first minute and never looked back. It was a comprehensive display of superiority.
Rhön went ahead through an own goal by H. Koch in the eighth minute, but Dresden responded immediately. N. Hauptmann netted in the seventeenth before V. Vermeij made it three by the thirtieth. B. Bobzien and K. Inanoglu added more goals before half-time, while R. Wagner scored in the fifty-fourth to complete the rout.
Westfalia made several changes in an attempt to stabilise the game, bringing on E. Kourouma and L. Koerdt on the restart. Dresden also reshuffled at the break, with four substitutions coming in quick succession. By then the result was already decided, but the visitors kept pushing.
The statistics told the story clearly. Dresden dominated possession at seventy-three per cent and registered eight shots on target compared to Rhön's single attempt. The hosts created zero big chances while the visitors generated two. Expected goals figures showed the gulf between the sides — 1.96 against 0.08.
And here's the thing — this was a Cup tie, not a league fixture, but the message was clear enough. Dresden advanced comfortably while Rhön's summer preparations have clearly not gone as planned. The gap between these two tiers of German football remains vast.
