Kevin Sinfield begins final MND fundraising challenge
Sinfield launched his last 'Grand Finale' ultra marathon week from Hull KR's ground, joined by Gareth Southgate, with almost £500,000 already pledged.
Sir Kevin Sinfield set off from Hull KR's Craven Park on Sunday morning at the start of "7 in 7: The Grand Finale",. Sir Gareth Southgate joined him for part of the opening stage.
Almost £500,000 has been pledged already. Sinfield's efforts since 2020 have now raised more than £11 million for the MND community.
The challenge began at Hull KR's ground before crossing the city to the MKM Stadium, home of Hull FC, then out through Market Weighton to Shiptonthorpe, where day one finished. Sinfield will run an ultra marathon every day for seven days, each one broken into 7km blocks that must be completed within the hour before the next one starts. Every day also carries an "extra mile" event, in which Sinfield runs four laps of a track alongside members of the MND community.
The route takes in the home grounds of all 12 English Betfred Super League clubs before finishing on the pitch at Old Trafford ahead of the Super League Grand Final. Sinfield's son Jack will be on that same pitch days later, playing for Wakefield against Warrington.
Six charities stand to benefit this year: the MND Association, Leeds Hospitals Charity, My Name5 Doddie Foundation, Darby Rimmer Foundation, MND Scotland and the Irish MND Association. The cause traces back to Rob Burrow, Sinfield's former Leeds Rhinos team-mate, who died in 2024 after four and a half years living with MND.
