About the player
As a teenager, Birkir Heimisson left Þór Akureyri for the academy of SC Heerenveen. Three years in the Netherlands brought no first-team football, and in January 2020 he returned to Iceland, joining Valur Reykjavík.
Heimisson became a fixture in Valur's midfield, as the club won the Icelandic league title in 2020, the domestic cup in 2021 and 2022, and the league cup in 2023. By the time he left, he had made 95 league appearances for the club and scored six goals.
He spent 2024 back at Þór Akureyri on a free transfer, playing 17 matches and scoring five goals, before returning to Valur in January 2025. The club added another league cup in 2025.
Heimisson has yet to be capped by Iceland's senior side, though he came through the youth ranks: four appearances for the under-21s between 2021 and 2023, three for the under-19s and six for the under-17s, without scoring at any of those levels.
