About the player
James Brown returned to the League of Ireland in February 2026, signing a long-term contract with St Patrick's Athletic. The Dublin-born right-back started out at Shelbourne, where he made 33 league appearances between 2016 and 2018, before a move to Drogheda United proved the making of him: he won the League of Ireland First Division title in 2020, was named in that season's PFAI First Division Team of the Year, took Drogheda's Supporters' Player of the Year award, and made the PFAI Premier Division Team of the Year in 2021.
That run earned him a free transfer to Blackburn Rovers in January 2022, a single appearance for Blackburn was followed by loan spells at Stockport County and Doncaster Rovers. He returned to Ireland in July 2023 with Ross County, making 58 league appearances and scoring once across two seasons, then joined Kilmarnock in August 2025 before coming back to the League of Ireland with St Patrick's Athletic.
By August 2026, Brown had made 27 league appearances for the club, with three assists to his name. His goal on 9 August 2026 carried extra weight: it came against Shelbourne, the club where he began his career, in a 2–1 win.
