Maren Haile-Selassie

In October 2023 he scored twice against Inter Miami and was named in the MLS Team of the Matchday. The following month Chicago exercised the option to buy him outright from Lugano.

Haile-Selassie came through at Zurich , debuting for the first team on 30 July 2017, and made 11 appearances there without scoring. The goals came out on loan instead: two at Rapperswil-Jona, one at Neuchâtel Xamax, then seven in 36 matches at Wil in 2020–21. He returned to Xamax permanently in July 2021 and scored six in 19.

The move to Lugano in December 2021 brought him a Swiss Cup winner's medal — and a goal in the final itself.

A lower-body injury cost him part of the 2025 pre-season. In April 2026 he came on for Hugo Cuypers while carrying an injury and scored the winner against Atlanta United.

Born in Zurich to a family of Ethiopian descent, he is sometimes referred to in Ethiopian media as Mistre Haile-Selassie. He is not related to the distance runner Haile Gebrselassie. He represented Switzerland at youth level — two caps at under-18, four at under-19, six and two goals at under-20 — and has not been called up by Ethiopia despite holding citizenship.
