The paperwork was signed in June 1997, but TSG Wismar pulled out almost at once, leaving SV Schifffahrt/Hafen Wismar holding the name FC Anker Wismar on its own. The merger was only completed on 31 January 2003, when the TSG senior side was dissolved.

Fritz Laband played for SG Wismar Süd between 1946 and 1950 and was a World Cup winner in 1954. Carsten Jancker was here until 1986.

Five Verbandsliga Mecklenburg-Vorpommern titles — 2000, 2004, 2010, 2015 and 2023 — have each carried the club up to the NOFV-Oberliga Nord, and four times they came straight back down. The 2023 promotion is the one that has held. In 2011-12, they reached the first round of the German Football Association Cup (DFB-Pokal) and were beaten 6-0 by Hannover 96.
