CALE Women

Joana Resende spent nine years working her way through CALE's youth ranks before Benfica and the national team came calling, and her path says something about what Clube de Andebol de Leça does best: it produces players rather than trophies. The club, based in Leça da Palmeira within the municipality of Matosinhos, has built its reputation on age-group handball, winning the national Under-17 (Iniciados) title in the 2016/2017 season and following it with the Under-19 (Juvenis) crown in 2018.

The senior side has not matched that record. Founded in 1999, CALE has stayed in Portugal's top flight, the 1ª Divisão Feminina, largely by fighting through relegation playoffs rather than chasing silverware. The closest the women's team has come to a major run was the 2021/2022 Taça de Portugal, where they reached the Final Four before losing in the semi-final to Colégio de Gaia.

Matches are played at the Pavilhão Municipal de Leça da Palmeira, a ground that holds 664 people. Madalena Freitas and Beatriz Barros are among the more recent names to come through that pipeline.

For now, the task each season stays the same one that has defined CALE for years: hold a place in the top division while the youth teams do the winning.
