Curzon Ashton

Richmond Street runs into the Tameside Stadium. It is a small enough space that a promotion push feels close-up, which is exactly what happened under manager John Flanagan, when Curzon Ashton won the Northern Premier League Division One North in 2013–14 and followed it a year later by taking the Premier Division play-offs, going up into the National League North. That step remains the highest the club has reached, and it did not last: they came back down at the end of the 2025–26 season, finishing 21st and losing out on goal difference.

Outside the ground, statues of Geoff Hurst and Jimmy Armfield mark the fact that both World Cup winners are from the area rather than from the club itself, and a plaque remembers Arthur Wharton, the first black professional footballer, who actually played for the long-defunct Ashton North End. The club has kept its own history shorter and plainer: Rod Lawton scored 376 goals for Curzon Ashton, still the most by anyone who has worn the shirt, and Niall Cummins passed 200 appearances and got the goal that sent them up in 2015. Adam Morgan, once on Liverpool's books as a youngster, is remembered locally for a hat-trick against AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup in December 2016, part of a run that took the club to the second round that season.

Matches against Ashton United and Stalybridge Celtic are still called the Ashton Derby or the Tameside Derby, and it is that local rivalry, more than anything won further afield, that the club was built around from the start. It began in 1963, when Curzon Road Methodists and Ashton Amateurs merged into one side, first known as Curzon Amateurs before settling on the name it carries now.
